Today I will be interviewing Ben Starling! Enjoy, and remember if you ever want to be interviewed Contact Me!
About Ben Starling: Ben Starling is passionate about marine conservation and boxing, both central themes in his upcoming novel. He is Oxford’s only ever Quintuple Blue (varsity champion five years running), was Captain of the university boxing team, and coached and boxed competitively. Ben graduated from Oxford University with a Master of Arts and an M Phil. He was born in the USA but has lived in the UK since childhood.
First of all, tell us a little about yourself!
Writer. Artist. Boxer. Poet. Philosopher. Former human cannon ball (fired). Dreamer. Fool. (One of these descriptors isn’t quite true…)
What inspired you to become an author?
An accidental long-term commitment to simplicity. It’s an occupation that lends itself to a lifestyle de-emphasizing material possessions and that promotes time for reflection. It’s so easy, so compelling to get caught up in the rush of city life, so difficult to wind down and be mindful of the little things, the simple things. The things which make life worthwhile.
What author influenced you the most?
Maeve Binchy for structure. Yann Martel for allegory and vivid settings. Nora Roberts for pizzazz!
Do you have a favourite author? (Or name a few)
PG Wodehouse for his mastery the art of comedic timing.
What is the best writing advice you have ever received?
Don’t!
What helps you write when you're stuck or have writer's block?
I swim until an idea comes – keeps the lifeguards on their toes. Right now, I’m doing about 60 laps, 5 days a week. The flow of water is peaceful, meditative. If I need inspiration, that’s where I go. For me, everything in life comes back to water.
What are you working on currently?
Right now, a series of prequel short stories to be released from September 21, 2015 that are set in the worlds and histories of the lead characters of my upcoming novel.
When you're not writing, what do you like to do?
Analyse boxing techniques on online. I used to coach and box competitively until a few years ago. Many people see only the force and lightning speed of boxing. But it is a beautiful sport in many ways too if you understand and watch for the underlying strategy in each play.
What are some of your most favourite books of all time?
The Old Man and the Sea. You Only Live Twice. The Horse Whisperer.
Is there anything specific you'd like to try writing about in the future?
I am already sketching out love story with sub-plot/s that explore land-based environmental issues. There are so many critical issues facing our world. If we don’t solve our environmental issues, well… there won’t be much left to worry about! Dr. Guy MacPherson said once: “If you think the economy is more important than the environment, try holding your breath whilst you count your money.”
Which of your characters do you love the most and why?
Thurston Morfil – he’s natty in his dress and diction in a way I could never be. I’m always fascinated to see what he does next.
Which one of your books are you most proud of?
This one! My upcoming novel (title soon to be revealed) which will be released on 21st January, 2016.
What is an interesting or hidden talent you have?
Making my detox-supreme wonder smoothie. Ginger, banana, strawberry, and a few secret ingredients that I vary each time.
Is there anything else you'd like my readers to know?
The blurb for my upcoming novel!
“What if to be with the man of your dreams… you had to give up your life? On the verge of losing her job, a side-lined journalist is forced to travel to the South Pacific to untangle a mystery where she meets a reclusive ex-boxer with a message. When a syndicate of corporate criminals invades paradise, she must either defend the island with her life or accept the plum promotion that will save her career.”
